Damp Spots on Walls
When wet or damp, block or concrete walls will turn a dark grey color.

Mold or Mildew
These fungi usually grow in dark, damp areas of the basement. They will usually cause discoloration on a variety of surfaces.

Efflorescence
This white chalky substance is the result of mineral deposits drying on the walls.

Musty Odors
The smell is the result of the decay process associated with mold, mildew and dry rot. A musty odor is often an indication of dampness even if no visible wetness
is evident.

Peeling Paint
Look for paint that is discolored, chipping and/or flaking off the walls.

Cracked Walls and Floors
Look for horizontal or vertical cracks on walls, and "step cracks" in corners.

Dry Rot and Warping
Basement moisture can cause wood to bow out of shape. Rot will occur as wood begins to decay from fungal growth.

Rust on Appliances
Look on fuse boxes or other metal appliances and furniture.
